Red Wine of the Week
Anne Collard
Rock, Paper, Scissors
Normally $18.99 /
Now on Sale for $16.96
90% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 2% Mourvèdre (Vin de France)
How It’s Made:
With her husband Francois, Anne Collard runs our favorite Costières de Nîmes winery, Château Mourgues du Grès. However, she always wanted to have vines in the Côtes du Rhône as well. In 2019, she made that wish happen. They make this light-bodied red at Mourgues du Grès from biodynamically grown Rhône grapes, which they macerate for just around a week. They ferment in concrete with indigenous yeasts before aging the wine for 10 months on lees in a combination of concrete and stainless steel. They bottle the final wine after adding a minimal amount of sulfur.
Why We Like It:
We’re bewitched by the caramel-like fruit cradled in supportive acid. On top of that pleasure, this red is flavorful with a level of crisp freshness that you associate with a rosé. Astonishing. Put a little chill on it and sit back and push away the summer.
White Wine of the Week
Château de Vaux
Les Gryphées
Moselle Blanc
Normally $21.99 /
Now on Sale for $17.96
50% Auxerrois, 20% Muller Thürgau, 20% Pinot-Gris, 10% Gewurztraminer (Moselle DOC)
How It’s Made:
The Moselle wine region is in northeastern France, following the Moselle River (“Mosel” in German) near the borders of Germany and Luxembourg. Château de Vaux takes its grapes — biodynamically grown in clay-limestone soils, on rocky hillside terraces along the river. They ferment each of the grapes separately in stainless steel and then blend the resultant wines together.
Why We Like It:
It’s got the bright fruit that you’d expect from northeastern France / near Germany and also has a quiet minerality running through it. The acid is softer than you’d expect, but the minerality provides such an apt foundation that the wine doesn’t lack for structure. It’s the French experience you hope for, accessible but still sophisticated.
Beer of the Week
Silver Branch
Amber Castle
Normally $12.99 /
Now on Sale for $11.96 (12 oz can six-pack)
Polotmavý Style Lager (5.0% ABV)
How It’s Made:
Silver Branch Brewing Company up in Silver Spring, MD is the brainchild of two homebrewers. They built their brewery to honor classic European and American styles. The Amber Castle is their take on a Polotmavý — a Czech Amber Lager.
Why We Like It:
This is the Amber Lager we’ve been looking for! It’s the right balance of malt and herbal hops. It’s got hints of the kind of spiciness that you find in a Czech Pilsner, but then there’s that caramel malt on top, but not too much of it. This beer would make a boring tightrope walker, because its balance is so spot on it would walk the rope like it was walking to the fridge to open you another can.
