White Wine of the Week
Weingut Weninger
Sopron Fehérburgundi
Normally $28.99 /
Now on Sale for $19.96
100% Fehérburgundi (Pinot Blanc) (Sorpon region)
How It’s Made:
Though biodynamic Austrian winemaker Franz Weninger is based in the Neusiedlersee, he also holds vineyards across the border in Sopron, in Hungary. That’s where he grows the Fehérburgundi (a.k.a. Pinot Blanc) grapes for this natural white.
Why We Like It:
Featuring grapes grown out of slate soils, this wine has a vibrant minerality to it. That minerality mixes with a bright acidity and tight salinity. Just a hint of spritz is the cherry on top of this elegant, zesty, salty, citrusy white.
Red Wine of the Week
Cellers de Can Suriol
Azimut
Penedés Negre
Normally $19.99 /
Now on Sale for $15.96
40% Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), 20% Garnatxa, 20% Monastrell, 10% Syrah, 10% Samsó (Carignan) (Penedés DO)
How It’s Made:
Cellars de Can Suriol ferments the grapes for this natural red for 20 days in stainless steel tanks (using indigenous yeasts, which we totally expect from them) and then ages the wine for 8-15 months in concrete, allowing it to go through malolactic fermentation. They bottle the wine with very little sulfur and leave it unfined but do run it through soft paper to filter out tartaric particles.
Why We Like It:
This is a lovely and luscious full-flavored red that still works in warm weather. The acid brightens the tannins that sit under its dark fruit and lifts the whole wine up to be much brighter than you’d expect.
Beer of the Week
Crooked Run
Skywalk
Normally $14.99 /
Now on Sale for $13.96 (16 oz can four-pack)
Hazy IPA (5.5% ABV)
How It’s Made:
Crooked Run Fermentation in Sterling, VA makes this IPA with a dose of New Zealand and a dose of America — Rakau and Simcoe hops.
Why We Like It:
Crooked Run calls this beer a West Coast IPA, but don’t you believe it! First of all, it’s unfiltered, which doesn’t rule out a West Coast IPA but definitely puts one strike against it. Most importantly, it’s the choice of and balance of hops. Simcoe is a West Coast usual suspect, but Rakau is a fruit note New Zealand hop. Crooked Run itself boasts of “peach” flavors, which we get. The thing is those fruit notes sit right next to the Simcoe zest. Don’t get us wrong, the blend is lovely. The balance makes this IPA tasty and oh, so drinkable. It’s just if you’re looking for a good old-fashioned citrusy, piney, hop ride (which is fine to want and find not to want), this ain’t that. Just to be clear, again … we do very much like what this is, though.
