Red Wine of the Week

Weingut Freitag
Naked Friday
Friday Night Dornfelder

Normally $26.99 /
Now on Sale for $19.96

100% Dornfelder (Rheinhessen region)

How It’s Made:

Weingut Freitag populates their Naked Friday line with German natural wines made from biodynamic grapes, farmed from just 2.5 hectares of vineyards. For this natural red, they use the relatively new German grape, Dornfelder (created just in 1956), which they carbonically macerate for seven days before pressing the juice into wooden barrels, where it continues to ferment. They then bottle the wine unfiltered and unfined with little or no sulfur.

Why We Like It:

Freitag says that their style is “fruity and acidic” and that, to that end, they pick their grapes early to capture their natural acidity. That description pegs the balance that you get in this light-bodied, slightly tart red. Put a little bit of a chill on it, and break out your richer foods. Try it with sausage and peppers, shrimp gumbo, or with jambalaya. (How would you say, “Let the good times roll” in German?)

White Wine of the Week

Marrenon
Les Grains
Vin de Pays de Méditerranée Viognier

Normally $16.99 /
Now on Sale for $14.96
100% Viognier (Mediterranean VdP)

How It’s Made:

Marrenon picks the grapes for this Viognier from plots that are 980 feet above sea level. They have them undergo a twelve hour maceration period (time when the grape juice and flesh sit and soak with the skins) at low temperature, enough to increase the aromatics of the resulting wine.

Why We Like It:

This southern France Viognier throws out its stone fruit notes like a politician throwing out invites to their latest rally, or they sit like a golfball on a tee of elderflower and vanilla. There’s just enough acid hanging around to keep the wine from being flabby and not enough to keep it from being scarily drinkable. It is a wine that is just begging for a porch and a sunset.

Beer of the Week

The Veil
Suspended

Normally $17.99 /
Now on Sale for $16.96 (16.9 oz can four-pack)
New England Style IPA (6.0% ABV)

How It’s Made:

Richmond’s The Veil makes this New England Style IPA with Enigma, Galaxy, and — your friends and ours — Mosaic hops.

Why We Like It:

The Veil claims that they’re “loving this hop combo,” and you can see why. The Suspended tastes like an IPA made by hop aficionados for hop aficionados — and that’s not to say that it’s a bitter bomb; that’s not the game here. Each of these three hops have complex flavor profiles, and so tasting them together in the ultra-hazy soup that the Veil provides is all about having the valences of their bright, zesty, fruitiness bouncing off of each other.
