In celebration of Virginia Craft Beer Month, our August Beers of the Week will be not just be Virginia beers, but local beers!

From 2019 to 2020, our own Three Notch’d Brewing Company ran their first Nephology Series - a collection of hazy IPAs made with different hop combinations — and they kept track of reactions to see which one was the most popular. At the end of the trial, they dubbed Nephology Series No. 4 the King of Clouds!

Back then, the winning combination of hops was Zythos, Mandarina Bavaria, and, everyone’s favorite, Mosaic. Though the King of Clouds remains in their lineup four years later, Three Notch’d has updated the recipe. The current King of Clouds is hopped with a combination of Citra and Nectaron hops.

New Zealand Plant & Food Research started developing the Nectaron in 2004. By 2020 they’d gotten it to the place where it was gifting brews with pineapple and citrus aromas and peach notes, and they released it commercially.

All that aroma and flavor is in full force in the King of Clouds, which just has fruity breezes burst out of the can. It then offers tropical fruit notes cradled in Citra’s zippy citrus embrace.

We liked the original King of Clouds, but we think we like the revamp even better! Could this be our new favorite VA NEIPA?
