Nighthawk Brewery & Pizza — a 10,000 square-foot brewpub and pizza place in Arlington — is the recently (2022) birthed baby of NoVA brewers and business bros. On the brewing side, the proud papas are Aslin Brewing Company founders Andrew Kelley and Kai Leszkowicz. They’re fans of the Pizza Port Brewing Company (which has multiple venues in southern California) and wanted to copy the idea here.

Thus, in 2020 they reached out to the hospitality collective the Wave Group and Georgetown restauranteur Johnny Spero, the chef behind Reverie and Bar Spero. Two years later, Nighthawk was up and hand tossing.

The Cowabunga is a much more refined NEIPA than its name and label would suggest. Lightly hazy, it’s off-dry and bittered with Mosaic, Citra, and Galaxy hops. What could go wrong? Well, whatever could go wrong, didn’t. The Cowabunga is quite lovely. It’s a clean and clear ride with hints of lime.

Though the child of Pizzaland, we say try it with tacos, fajitas, or wings.
