100% Montepulciano (Molise DOC)
Though winemaking has been going on in south central Italy’s Molise region since 500 BCE, it has traditionally been overshadowed by its larger and more famous neighbors to the north, Lazio and Abruzzo. However, Molise is a fun little region full of mountains and vineyards enjoying hillside exposure. That’s where you’ll find Campi Valerio, outside of Moneteroduni in the province of Iserna.
Founded in 2004, Campi Valerio started with a vineyard originally established in the 17th century by Neapolitan Prince Giovanni Pignatelli. Today, the Valerio family now holds five sustainably farmed, organic vineyards along with two farms of cattle and sheep and 30 hectares of olive trees.
The Calidio is Valerio’s 100% organic Montepulciano delivering strong cherry notes with a little bit of spice around the edges. Give this wine a try to see what Montepulciano outside of Abruzzo is like.
